Plastic bans have been implemented in many regions around the world. Hyde Group has always provided environmentally friendly product options for businesses and consumers. For the category of straws, the two most common types are: paper straws and bagasse straws. This article will introduce these two types of straws from perspectives such as production, performance, and usage, to help you make a choice.

Due to its simple technology and low operation difficulty, paper straws have occupied a large part of the market and gained consumers' favor before other biodegradable straws became widespread.
·What are paper straws made of?
We make wood pulp into paper, then roll the paper into a tube shape, and finally bond it with food-grade adhesive.
·Are paper straws made entirely of wood pulp?
The answer is no. If you have used paper straws, you know that they become soft when placed in liquids for a long time. To slow down this softening process, we apply a layer of wax or PLA on the surface of the straws. That's why paper straws cannot fully decompose in a composting environment. Therefore, it is necessary to determine whether this layer material meets your environmental protection standards before purchasing.

Bagasse straws are more sturdy and durable, and they also fully meet the requirements of being plastic-free and biodegradable.
·What is the Bagasse straw made of?
The raw material of the Bagasse straw is the residue of sugarcane. These residues are the waste materials produced after sugar processing. If not reused, they would be burned or discarded. So, through a high-temperature and high-pressure molding process, we turn them into usable straws. The most important thing is that the Bagasse straws themselves do not contain PLA or any other bioplastics. During the molding process, the fibers naturally bond with each other to form a strong structure that is not easily soaked by liquids. Compared to paper straws, they do not require any plastic coating and can maintain sufficient strength in liquids.

Bagasse Straws vs. Paper Straws:

1. Environmental Attributes and Sustainability

- Bagasse Straws: Sugarcane bagasse, as agricultural waste, is transformed into straws, which is turning waste into treasure and are the reuse of resources. No trees need to be cut down or new land occupied. Moreover, as it is a natural component, it can be composted in industrial facilities and is more suitable for home composting. The degradation process is thorough and more environmentally friendly.
- Paper Straws: The raw material, wood pulp, comes from sustainably managed forests and is a renewable resource. The supply chain is mature, but it still consumes forest resources in essence. And due to the coating issue mentioned above, paper straws cannot completely degrade in the natural environment and require reliance on specific commercial facilities. The processing threshold is relatively high.

2. Durability and User Experience

- Bagasse Straws:
The structure of the Bagasse straw is stable. Whether it is used for hot drinks or cold drinks, the Bagasse straw will not become soft or collapse. Therefore, the Bagasse straw is very suitable for customers who like to enjoy their beverages slowly. Moreover, it does not contain any paper, soil or any special flavors, and has gradually gained popularity among consumers.
- Paper Straws:
Even with PLA coating, paper straws cannot be left in liquids for a long time. If the beverage is too hot or very thick, the paper straws will become softer and emit a wood pulp smell. However, since the characteristics of paper straws are already well-known to enterprises and consumers, as long as people can control the usage duration subjectively, it does not affect their use.

3. Market Value and Brand Positioning

- Bagasse Straws:
The Bagasse straws, due to their natural and simple beige texture, can directly convey the brand's commitment to environmental protection, facilitating the creation of a pure, natural brand image. However, precisely because they are more upscale, the cost per single straw is higher.

- Paper Straws:

Paper straws, because they can be mass-produced at a lower cost and have a stable supply, are an economical and reliable choice for businesses. Moreover, the appearance of paper straws is suitable for high customization, allowing for printing of colors and logos, which is conducive to brand marketing.
