Many biodegradable bowls and plates on the market today are made from bagasse. These green bowls and plates have the advantage of being durable, microwave-safe, decomposing into nutrient-rich soil and not using trees in the production process. All of this is thanks to what we think of as waste -- bagasse.

How is bagasse used to make plates and bowls
Bagasse is the fibrous material left after juice is removed from the sugar cane stem. The fiber portion usually becomes waste when the SAP separates. Hyde upgrades or uses bagasse, which normally ends up in landfills, to make usable and sustainable goods. We convert bagasse into useful products. So a lot of bagasse is saved from landfills.
To make compostable bagasse dishes and bowls, the process starts with recycled bagasse material. The material arrives at the manufacturing plant in the form of wet pulp. Then the wet pulp is pressed in the beating tank and converted into dry pulp board. Bagasse can be made into tableware with wet pulp or dry pulp board. Although wet pulp requires fewer steps in the production process than using dry pulp boards, wet pulp retains impurities in its mixture. The Hyde plant takes extra steps to remove impurities and convert wet pulp to dry pulp board to produce a higher quality product.
After the wet pulp is converted into dry pulp board, the material is mixed with oil and water resistant agent in the pulping machine to make the material stronger. After mixing, the mixture is piped into a preparation tank and then into a molding machine. The molding machine immediately presses the mixture into bowl or plate shapes, making up to six plates and nine bowls at a time.
The finished bowls and pans were then tested for oil and water resistance. Only after bowls and plates pass these tests can they be packaged and ready for consumer use. The finished package contains plates and bowls and can be used for picnics, cafeterias or any time disposable cutlery is needed. Peace of mind tableware for environmentalists.

Plates and bowls made from bagasse are 100% biodegradable and can be completely decomposed within 90 days in a composting facility. Hyde uses waste products that end up in landfills and creates a useful, consumer-ready product with little impact on the environment. We are proud to be closer to eliminating waste from landfills.
